Job Overview:

We are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) to support pre-operative patient care within the VA Medical Center in San Diego. This role is essential in preparing patients for surgical procedures, ensuring all pre-op requirements are completed accurately and efficiently. The LVN will work closely with registered nurses and providers to deliver safe, patient-centered care to veterans in a clinical setting.


Key Responsibilities:

Prepare patients for surgical procedures, including completing pre-operative checklists and documentation

Obtain and record vital signs, medical history updates, and pre-op assessments within scope of practice

Ensure all required pre-operative documentation, labs, and clearances are completed and available

Assist with patient education regarding pre-procedure instructions and expectations

Monitor patient condition and report any abnormalities or concerns to the RN or provider

Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR)

Support infection control protocols and maintain a clean, organized clinical environment

Assist with patient flow and coordination within the pre-operative unit

Collaborate with RNs, providers, and surgical staff to ensure readiness for procedures

Uphold patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and VA regulations


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Completion of an accredited Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program

Current, active LVN license

Current BLS certification (American Heart Association preferred)

At least 1 year of clinical experience, including pre-operative patient care


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a pre-operative or surgical setting

Familiarity with pre-op workflows, documentation, and patient preparation processes

Experience working in a hospital or ambulatory surgery environment

Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems

Strong communication skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
